Feeling right at home at Embassy Suites Orange County

Travel isn’t always perfected composed Instagram photos, sometimes it is flight delays, lost luggage, and meltdowns in the terminal. Coming home from our Anaheim Quest that included visits to Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farms, I met this trifecta of travel woes in the span of 24 hours, with both girls in tow…. solo. After a … Read More

Meow Wolf Denver 🐺⁣ ⁣ Meow Wolf is a unique Meow Wolf Denver 🐺⁣
⁣
Meow Wolf is a unique and immersive art experience that is great for kiddos if all abilities, however if your kiddo is on the spectrum a little extra prep & planning is recommended for your visit. ⁣
⁣
✨️ Before visiting Meow Wolf watch videos to get an idea of what to expect. This can also help you decide which exhibits to prioritize and plan your route through the exhibit.⁣
⁣
✨️ Prepare for Sensory overload! @meow__wolf is a sensory filled environment, with lots of sound, light, and visual stimulation. Bring your noise-cancelling headphones, sunglasses, or other sensory aids to help regulate the sensory input.⁣
⁣
✨️ Take break! We were there for 3 hours and I'm sure we still missed things, so plan for breaks and snack throughout your visit. There are several areas inside the exhibit where you can sit and rest, or you may can take a break outside of the exhibit area or café.⁣
⁣
They also offer sensory bags!⁣
⁣
*Mobility Notes: ⁣
- Not all areas are wheelchair accessible, but MOST are. There are several paths to get to areas so ask a staff member about alternative routes.⁣
- While regular strollers aren't allowed, strollers as a wheelchair are. Be sure to get your stroller tagged upon entry.
The Hendy Grove All Access Trail 👩🏽‍🦽🏞⁣
⁣
Hendy Woods State Park is the perfect place to soak in the stunning beauty of Northern California. The Hendy Woods All Access Trail was designed to provide a barrier-free experience to visitors of all abilities. ⁣
⁣
The trail features a smooth surface and gentle grades, making it perfect for folks with limited mobility, wheelchairs, or strollers. ⁣
⁣
The wheelchair-accessible portion of the All Access Trail is approximately 0.6 miles long and is known for its beautiful redwood grove. ⁣
⁣
The Hendy Grove Trail offers a few different options to accommodate visitors with different mobility needs:⁣
⁣
✨️ Accessible Parking: The Hendy Woods State Park offers accessible parking spots close to the trailhead, making it easier for visitors with mobility impairments to access the trail.⁣
⁣
✨️ Paved Trail Surface: The trail itself is paved, which provides a smooth and stable surface for visitors using wheelchairs, walkers, or other mobility aids.⁣
⁣
✨️ Benches and Rest Areas: The trail also offers several benches and rest areas along the way, which provide a place for visitors to take a break and enjoy the scenery.⁣
⁣
🌄 The Discovery Loop Trail offers easy access from the All Access Trail. This .45-mile hard-packed dirt trail is an excellent option. If you're feeling up to a longer stroll, you can continue on to the Upper Loop Trail, which branches off from the Discovery Loop and spans 1.8 miles through the grove.⁣

Living Desert Zoo w/Autism 🏜 ⁣ ⁣ During our Living Desert Zoo w/Autism 🏜 ⁣
⁣
During our California trip, we spent a weekend in Palm Springs and visited the Living Desert Zoo & Gardens. Before visiting I had no idea that it was a Certified Autism Center, so it was a wonderful surprise to see sensory bags available as soon as we entered. Little did I know what other sensory inclusive wonders were waiting for us! ⁣
⁣
Right off the bat I noticed how quiet the zoo and gardens were. Initially I thought that was because we came later in the day but, but soon realized through the many Quiet Areas by @kulturecity that it was intentional 😍⁣
⁣
Roo loved the park so much that we were basically the last people to leave at closing time. ⁣
⁣
Here are a few quick tips for your visit:⁣
1) Plan for 3-4 hours minimum! There are so many exhibits and gardens to explore. We only had 3 hours before closing and missed seeing a lot 😬⁣
⁣
2) Consider sensory sensitivities such as smell, sunlight, or increased sound from crowds. ⁣
⁣
3) Build in breaks! @thelivingdesert has more quiet areas than I've seen in a long time, so take advantage of them. ⁣
⁣
4) Use Zoo maps & Social Stories to reduce anxiety and plan out your day. ⁣
⁣
5) Rent/bring any mobility aids or wheelchairs. There is a lot of ground to cover and even with a plethora of benches it can be helpful to have a mobility aid. ⁣
⁣
Have you ever visited the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens? What was your favorite exhibit? ⁣
When RV Life gets REAL. ⁣ ⁣ We've been full-ti When RV Life gets REAL. ⁣
⁣
We've been full-time stationary RV living since June 2020, and overall it has been amazing. But the winters can be brutal and with all the freezing this winter Emerald-Jade sprung a leak 😫. RV shops usually have a long waiting list, so after over a month, she's finally headed to the shop 🙌🏾⁣
⁣
*Note: As someone who suffered with chronic houselessness after I got out of the military, I am definitely taking the "homeless" part of this with humor. I'm so grateful that my parents are local so we have somewhere to stay while repairs are taking place.

Haircut Tips for Sensory Sensitivities⁣ ⁣ A fe Haircut Tips for Sensory Sensitivities⁣
⁣
A few weeks ago, Bug asked for a haircut and here are 5 key things I did for it to go as smooth as possible. ⁣
⁣
1) Bodily Autonomy- Her choice to get a haircut was solely her decision so she was excited about it!⁣
⁣
2) Build hype about the haircut date- We put the date on the calendar and had a countdown.⁣
⁣
3) Choose a kid's salon- I knew there would be tears so I did a lot of research to ensure the stylist we picked was comfortable with kid's crying. I also put a note about her sensitivities when booking the appointment.⁣
*𝘈𝘯 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘭𝘰𝘢𝘥 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵. 𝘌𝘯𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺'𝘷𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘢 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘯𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵'𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘢𝘺𝘣𝘦 𝘢 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘬𝘧𝘢𝘴𝘵.⁣
⁣
4) Leave plenty of room for tears. Rushing through the appointment and forcing them to "get over" the tears will only make things more difficult. I held Bug's hand the entire time and her stylist was very patient with her wincing and crying.⁣
⁣
5) Provide reassurance and plan something special afterwards- We went to her favorite store, Dollar Tree.⁣
⁣

Why I use a Wheelchair even though I can "walk"⁣ Why I use a Wheelchair even though I can "walk"⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Disability is not as black-and-white as society likes to make us believe. We've been made to believe that the only people who use wheelchairs can't stand/walk at all, and if you can walk you're being lazy or worse, faking.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This belief plagued me when deciding to buy a wheelchair. I had convinced myself that if I just tried harder I could walk everywhere. But the truth is that my stroke left me with significant brain damage. My Left side is partially paralyzed and has no sensation, which means my brain barely recognizes that it is attached to my body anymore. This leads to weakness, excruciating nerve pain, balance issues, and is unsafe. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Every time I use my wheelchair, and then stand up to fold it up, I have to remind myself that my chair doesn't mean I'm faking nor does it make me a failure. Using my crutch, pushing through the pain/weakness and potentially falling doesn't make me a hero either. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
We have to unlearn the ideas that disability "looks" a certain way and that disabled people have to conform to those ideas in order to be deemed "disabled enough."

Unboxing my new Airhawk Power Folding Wheelchair 👩🏾‍🦼

After agonizing for months, we made the difficult decision to purchase a power wheelchair. Although I felt so much shame buying it, I had to remind myself that the voice talking was my internalized abelism.

This wheelchair is just like my crutch... a mobility aid.

If you're thinking about abandoning the hustle & bustle, and frigid temps, this is your sign to consider the Caribbean!⁣
⁣
Last year's trip was my 2nd visit to One Happy Island, and it is quickly becoming one of my favorite spots for family or solo/friendcations!⁣
⁣
Here's some quick tips for planning:!⁣
⁣
✨️ SKIP the Renaissance and the Flamingos 🙄. Instead opt for an Airbnb away from the tourist area of town. ⁣
⁣
✨️ Rent a car so you can visit all of the incredible beaches!⁣
⁣
✨️ Throw away the itineraries. Pick a beach for the day, swing by the grocery store for snacks, and spend the day lounging. ⁣
⁣
✨️ Bring good bug spray. Re-apply especially toward dusk.⁣

I will say that a rainy weekday wasn't terrible. There were less people so we were able to drive a bit slower to enjoy the lights. ⁣

If you're in the Atlanta area and want to check it out, I recently saw a 20% promo online.

Kentucky is a unexpected gem for Nature lovers! I Kentucky is a unexpected gem for Nature lovers!

I'll be the first to admit, before we visited Kentucky, I thought it was all about the Derby and Bourbon, but I was so wrong!

We only visited the Southern Lakes area, but there are tons of other amazing natural wonders like:
- Mammoth Caves
- Red River Gorge
- Yahoo Falls
- Natural Bridge Trail
- and much more!

It is also a great place to see the leaves peaking in the Fall or hike in the snow in the Winter!

Our trip to Kentucky was life changing in so many ways. It was a trip that will live with us forever and while it's easy to get wrapped up in the medical emergency stuff I also want to cherish all of the fun we had before the stroke!

These photos hold such a special place in my heart. I had my stroke 3 weeks before Roo's birthday which meant not only did her birthday trip get canceled, but I was unable to take her milestone photos.⁣
⁣
I offered to have someone else take them, but she refused and said she would wait until I was better. So I put photography as one of my top Physical and Occupational Therapy goals. ⁣
⁣
Earlier this month, I finally felt strong enough to take a short trip and more importantly to take her photos. We headed down to Fort Lauderdale and the rest is pure magic!⁣
⁣
I can't believe my baby is 10 😭 She is such an amazing daughter and sister. ⁣Roo aspires to be a Marine Biologist so a beach themed photoshoot perfectly encapsulated her love for the ocean and all the life within in!
