Kwanzaa
African - Drumming

It is my favorite time of year again, Kwanzaa! Kwanzaa is a time for us to join together and reflect on the principles that we as a community share to build our collective unity. It is a time to honor our ancestors as well as the contributions and sacrifices that they made.

So what exactly is Kwanzaa?

Kwanzaa is an African-American annual celebration from December 26 – January. The name comes from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza,” which means “first fruits.” Kwanzaa is a relatively young holiday, that was created in 1966 but started becoming popular in the late 1980s and early ’90s. Kwanzaa is defined by Nguzo Saba, the seven principles. On each day of Kwanzaa, a new candle is lit on the kinara and represents each of the 7 days. Kwanzaa also incorporates symbolism, such as the mat (mkeka), which is the foundation for self-actualization. The candle holder (Kinara) reminds us of Mother Africa and our ancestral origins there. Corn (muhindi) represents children and the collective hope that we have in the future generation. The Unity Cup (Kkimbe cha Umoja) is used to pour libations to the ancestors. Lastly, the seven candles (mishmaa saba) that remind us of the seven principles and are the colors in the Pan-African flag: Red, Black, and Green. The Black candle represents the African people, the red symbolizes their struggles, and the green represents the hope for our future.

What are the 7 Kwanzaa Principles?

Umoja: Unity – To strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation, and race.

Kujichagulia: Self-Determination – To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves, and speak for ourselves.

Ujima: Collective work and responsibility – To build and maintain our community together and make our brother’s and sister’s problems our problems and to solve them together.

Ujamaa: Cooperative Economics – To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness.

Nia: Purpose – To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness.

Kuumba: Creativity – To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.

Imani: Faith – To believe with all our heart in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders, and the righteousness and victory of our struggle.

What about Kwanzaa gifts?

Gifts (Zawadi) traditionally stood for the commitments between parents and their children. However, over the years, a lot of people have expanded the sentiments of Zawadi to be intentional about buying from Black-owned businesses. It is important to remember that Kwanzaa does not focus on gift-giving, it is not a second Christmas. Gifts are meant to be intentional and are often educational for children or meaningful tokens. Often gifts are homemade rather than purchased, but if you are looking for gifts for Kwanzaa you are in the right place! I have gathered a list of some of my favorite Black-owned businesses. This list will be updated throughout the year, so make sure to check it out when thinking about buying a gift for someone!

Rae Akino

Art – Rae Akino | Visual Artist

Prints start at $40.00

Rae Akino’s work is the kind that will stop you in your tracks and take your breath away. Their work centers on Afrocentrism, identity, sexuality, spirituality, and mental health. What I love about their work is that they are all conversation pieces and they have a way of capturing really intense emotions. As an Alvin Ailey fan, naturally, I had to have their A. Ailey Tribute piece. I love it because it is powerful, but the lower portion conveys (to me) that Alvin Ailey’s legacy and work in unfinished and that there is so much still to share/create. Y’all don’t judge my artistic interpretations lol. Make sure to follow Rae’s IG page to see some behind the scenes content. Personally, I use it to window shop for future pieces! They recently created this gorgeous piece with a little girl and sunflowers that is just divine!
