My eyes gently open and adjust to the light flowing through my bedroom window, a myriad of smells and sounds of pots and pans dance into the room greeting me. They signal that my mother is hard at work creating a tantalizing masterpiece. As the smells of the feast that is being prepared washes over me, a smile creeps across my face as I realize it is finally Thanksgiving.
Worried that I overslept and missed it, I bolt up, frantically searching for my bedside clock. I breathe a sigh of relief as the display reads 8:35 a.m. I’m right on time. I leap from bed, brush my teeth and wash my face, before hurrying to my brother’s room to shake him awake. You see, Thanksgiving is a big deal in this house and not just because of the mouth-watering delight my mother is preparing. Thanksgiving morning is the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade!
We have watched the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade for as long as I can remember, each year following the same tradition. We huddle around the t.v. in the living room with a bowl of mom’s cinnamon sweet oatmeal watching the floats, performances, and balloons as they dance down Central Park West street in New York City.
Fast forward almost 14 years later and watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade is still a family tradition, although things have changed just a bit over the years. On Thanksgiving morning as my eyes gently open and adjust to the room, it is still dark outside with the faint sounds of the birds waking for daybreak. My mom and I brush our teeth, wash our faces, tie on our aprons, and begin the labor of love that is preparing Thanksgiving dinner.
As the sun begins to break over the horizon I wiz upstairs to wake Roo up because it is almost time! She springs from the bed and hurriedly brushes her teeth and flies down the stairs. I have her bowl of oatmeal waiting for her as we check turn our t.v. to NBC and prepare for the magic to start.
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has been a family time tradition for many years and I intend to keep it alive for many years to come through my daughters. We cannot wait to gather together in the living room and tune in on November 23rd at 9 a.m. EST to continue the tradition! This year’s parade will feature a new opening with a star-studded cast performing an epic performance of Dancin’ in the Street! We can’t wait to see Frozen’s Olaf balloon, alongside classic favorites like Charlie, Kit, and C.J. the Holiday Elves.
We’ll be singing along with the 1-2-3 Sesame Street float, and performances from Andra Day, Common, and Smokey Robinson, and getting our kick line on with The Radio City Rockettes™. But of course, the best part is when Santa comes gliding down the parade route signaling that the holiday celebrations can officially begin!
